Gaochun "intelligent manufacturing" enterprises to increase research and development efforts
2020-03-15

As a "smart manufacturing" company in the new energy vehicle industry chain, Nanjing Skysource Power Technology Co., Ltd. views epidemic prevention as a touchstone for honing its internal capabilities. While implementing control measures, the company is also racing against time to advance various innovation and research and development efforts. So far, the company has fully activated two production lines.

"Normal temperature, you can enter the workshop..." Every morning, outside the production workshop in the Gaochun Economic Development Zone, staff members carefully measure the temperature of each worker entering the workshop with thermometers. Inside the factory, cleaning personnel spray disinfectant in key passageways. Here, reporters observed a bustling scene where research, testing, and production tasks are proceeding in an orderly manner.

Skysource Power mainly engages in the independent research and development, production, and sales of core components for new energy vehicles, such as charging power battery packs, vehicle controllers, and charging piles. Its products are widely used in various fields of new energy vehicles, including pure electric commercial vehicles, passenger cars, logistics vehicles, and hybrid vehicles. The company has established long-term strategic partnerships with major new energy vehicle manufacturers both domestically and internationally. Currently, the company is steadily advancing its research and production efforts according to the overall production and marketing plan set at the beginning of 2020.

During this special period, how can the company achieve efficient operation? Skysource Power took immediate action to adjust to the pandemic, emphasizing that "to combat the pandemic, the enterprise must innovate in resuming work and operate efficiently." Jiang Min, the general manager of Nanjing Skysource Power Technology Company, decisively stated this on February 8. Skysource Power urgently established a "System Optimization Working Group" to achieve the optimization and upgrade of control systems for its products through both online and offline efforts, while also accelerating product research and development. The "passive" downtime caused by the pandemic was redefined by Jiang Min as an opportunity for the company to "hone its skills."

"In response to the pain points revealed during after-sales service, we utilized the pandemic period to systematically address and resolve these issues," Jiang Min said. The System Optimization Working Group, which operates with a problem-oriented approach, includes over 70 personnel from various departments such as software engineering, core component suppliers, hardware and software laboratories, and vehicle debugging departments. "In the past, our focus was solely on promoting production, and the company rarely had the chance to 'look back,'" Jiang Min noted. Normally, the company lacked time to coordinate such a large number of employees for unified action, and optimizing product systems often required extensive collaboration and numerous verifications among different departments. Currently, the working group has optimized 12 sets of control systems.

One of the major challenges in the research and development of new energy batteries is how to reduce high energy consumption after the startup of the "water cooling system." Members of the System Optimization Working Group conducted extensive experiments targeting this energy consumption issue; programmers controlled the operations remotely while the debugging workshop carried out multiple rounds of simulation testing. Ultimately, the optimization group improved the control of the battery system and the product structure, leading to a 40% reduction in battery energy consumption. This figure signifies a rapid improvement in both the performance and efficiency of the batteries.

"I believe this will be a key year for the company's innovative development and accelerated upgrades," Jiang Min said. He emphasized that the impact of the pandemic on the company's profitability is temporary and has not disrupted the overall development rhythm of the company. From a long-term perspective, this timely and effective "self-sustenance" presents an opportunity for the company's research and innovation efforts to reach new heights, and he is confident that new opportunities will emerge after the pandemic is over.
